take it one block at a time

The Block Library

Every quilt you can design in QuiltPlan is pieced from the simple blocks on this page. Learn them one at a time, and there is no design in the app you could not sew.

There are only about two dozen of these blocks, and most of them are cousins. If you can sew a half-square triangle, a pinwheel is just four of them taking a spin. Master a handful and whole quilts open up.

That is the whole idea behind QuiltPlan. Design any quilt you like, and the app breaks it down into these same little blocks, with exact cutting numbers, the yardage to buy, and a shopping list. You bring the sewing; it brings the math.

Each block family below is getting its own guide: how to cut it, how to sew it, the mistakes everyone makes once, and a free printable cheat sheet for your design wall. We are adding the guides in the order a beginner would learn them, so if you are new, start at the top and work down.

Blocks make the quilt top. Borders, sashing, and the quilting itself finish the job, and we will cover those here too, one step at a time.
